Apple Notebook Region Free DVD Drive
The Apple notebook (Powerbook & iBook) DVD drive is NOT region free. Meaning, you cannot play DVD of different regions.
You are allowed to make only five changes to the DVD drive region. After that, the region is permanent.
We can make the DVD drive become region free by upgrading the DVD drive firmware. Please note that it is an unofficial firmware. Installing unofficial firmware may void your Apple warranty.

Whoever heard of region locking nowadays. Probably 2 years ago … maybe.

Hi,
What you can do, is to disable the “When you insert a video dvd” in the System Preferences, then intall “VLC” player. I’ve got no problem playing diffrent regions and won’t get the notification message anymore.
Hope this helps,
Chris

hi,
well, “VLC” player used to work on osx but not anymore with osx tiger. i have ibook g4 and tried to play a foreign dvd on “VLC”, but i’ve got the notification message and couldn’t watch the dvd. i think a dvd player on newer ibook has a protection for region locking.
